One of the big differences between a so-so garden and a great one is compost.
It may be “just” decomposed organic materials, but compost (or humus) yields benefits far greater than the sum of its ingredients. Your garden loves compost because:
- It opens up the pores in the soil, so more air and water can get in.
- It makes nutrients in the soil more available to plants on an as-needed basis.
- It helps keep soil ecology balanced, encouraging the right amounts and mixes of bacteria, earthworms and other helpful critters.
And why should you love compost? Because:
- It improves the soil texture, making it much easier to dig in your garden.
- It retains moisture, so you can water the garden less frequently.
- It’s an environmentally friendly way to recycle scraps, garbage, and wastes.
- Unlike many other soil amendments, it doesn’t cost a thing.
If you haven’t been composting, now is a good time to start. Your garden will love you for it.
